Barton Wayne Hultine was born September 10, 1946 to Dale and Hildy Hultine of Saronville, Nebraska (population 38). He was born the fifth generation of Swedish immigrants; two younger brothers were to follow as well as a sister who passed shortly after birth. His childhood home was rural; consisting of row crop farming, breeding of Polled Short Horn cattle and raising swine. Family was near; granting access to uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents and great grandparents.
Land, family, friends and a strong sense of community created an environment for a young boy to explore and dream; radio programs, books and yarn fueled his desire to create, participate, try and see what was over the next hill; tree houses were mid-evil fortresses, feed-bunks were Caribbean pirate ships, quarter horses were Indian war ponies and any tree branch or fencing rod was a Roman sword. All came to life on the ponds and in the dirt of a Clay County, Nebraska.
Work was always present, though not defined as such; responsibility to family and community, husbandry of livestock, cultivation of crops and preservation of what was acquired was the means by which things got done. Time was not the measure of a days work, nor was it always a compensated commodity; time pertained when it came to dinner, family and friends, music lessons, school and a measure of how far a destination was.
As grade school gave way to high school the world only seemed to get bigger, horses and go-carts were traded for motorcycles and cars, favorite hatchets and hay forts for girls and sports.
